Hamster Dance

The original Hamster Dance was hokey yet entrancing. With its looped bluegrass/electronica soundtrack inspired by the Disney version of “Robin Hood” and simple animations repeating the simplest of animated moves, Hamster Dance should not have worked—but it did. And that is one catchy tune. Hamster Dance is still online, if you can believe it. Failing to anticipate the video’s popularity, or perhaps incognizant of the nature of domain-retention in 1998, site creator Deidre LaCarte lost the hamsterdance.com domain. The original is still running—without the eternally looping music, we’re grateful to note—at webhamster.com.

Dancing Baby

Mix an old pop hit—Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling”—with a strangely unattractive animated baby, and faster than you can say “Ooga chacka,” we have our first truly popular Internet meme. Michael Girard, Robert Lurye, and Ron Lussier animated the little bugger, which appeared in the television series Ally McBeal as well as some advertisements and several music videos—not to mention every inbox on the planet.

Badgerbadgerbadger

Another classic example of repetitive music that gets in your head and stays there, the “Badgers Badgers Badgers” song and animation begs you to watch and listen by throwing in other lyrics and images periodically. Around the time you begin chanting “badger badger badger” under your breath in time with the audio track, the animation switches to a red, speckled mushroom, and after a few more repetitions, an African snake—making you wonder whether there will be others if you listen long enough. To our knowledge, there aren’t.
